Last night our ward had a Daddy/Daughter date night. Joe took the girls to carve pumpkins, bob for apples, etc, etc. After discussing it, we decided that this date night would ONLY involve the three elder daughters. In other words, Bekah was not going. The activities seemed too difficult for Bekah to really do and it would be a pain for Joe to try to hold her while helping three other little ones participate. In addition, we thought it was outside (to my relief, it actually ended up being indoors) and it was very chilly. Hopefully next year Rebekah will be big enough to go.That being said, Joe and I knew that we were going to be in for a battle. For those of you who don't know, Bekah has a deep and abiding love for her father. While mommy is perfectly fine during the day while Papa is at work, evening is another story! Bekah loves, adores, and cannot stand to share her dad. If he is home, she is glued next to him. If we are out somewhere, she must be with him at all times. If he gets up to bear his testimony or sing with the choir at church, she will scream and howl for all to hear (just to make sure that everyone knows that I am a terrible substitute for her dad).
I could tell that she knew something was up last night, so I made the brilliant plan to leave BEFORE the other guys and take Bekars to the grocery store with me. That way, she would miss them leaving and *hopefully* not freak out too much. Being suspicious that her Papa was going somewhere, she seemed SOOOO happy when he buckled her into her carseat. She would get to go! She typically loves going places so I figured this would make her happy. When Papa RETURNED to the house, however, and Mama had the audacity to back out of the garage without him, Bekars was confused and bewildered! I tried to act all happy..."Yay Beks! Let's go to the store! This is going to be so much fun!" but all she could say was, "Uh oh! Uh oh! No, no, no, no, no Papa", while waving her hands frantically. She did this until we were about halfway to the store. At this point, I think she realized that I was not returning to pick up her beloved father and proceeded to wail in despair. While sad, it was also pretty cute to watch her try to communicate with me. I know what she was trying to say was, "Mom! Wait! You inconceivably left our dear Papa behind at the house! I would really appreciate it if you could turn our car around and go back to pick him up. Thanks. " Unfortunately, all that came out was "Uh oh! Uh oh! No, no, no, no, no, no Papa!" over and over again. :)
I'm pretty sure I remember a pretty horrific pregnancy, followed by long sleepless nights and hours rocking this child as a baby. I have changed more diapers, tickled more bellies, kissed more owies, and read more stories to this little girl than Joe ever did! Where is the devotion in return? :)
The other girls had an AWESOME time with their dad, though, and after a few minutes in the store, Bekah adjusted to the lack of a Papa in her evening. It will be so fun when all four can go. :)
We should have been cowboys! These guys look great :)

The guys brought back a WONDERFUL pumpkin!

I'll never forget those early years when Hannah used to love to EAT the inside of the pumpkin. Gross!
