Our Wasp Adventure

Have you ever been afraid of something? Dogs? Clowns? Bees? Mice? I know I have. As a child I was afraid of all the previously mentioned things. LOL. As an adult...well, I'm not afraid of clowns anymore, haha. That's got to count for something. :) My fear of dogs and bees are much diminished, but still there (although my mice fears are another story...as you've read here before). I mainly know how to avoid them and when I should or should not be nervous (okay, I am still nervous sometimes when I know I shouldn't be, lol). I try to not show those fears in front of my kids, though.

So today was a bad mom moment (where my irrational fears finally bit me in the backside). I was outside watching the kids play in the water. They had been having a marvelous time in the pool and running in the sprinklers. Unfortunately, we seem to have a lot of wasps right now. I'm guessing it is the weather or something. I think that these wasps were annoyed with us invading their space and so one of them decided to do something about it, hehe.

The big kids and I just happened to be discussing the wasps (which they actually do NOT know I am afraid of...I guess they'll find out when they read this blog). I was mentioning how they should be fine because wasps don't really like water (is this even true?). Ironically, as we were talking about it, a wasp descended and landed on sweet little Bekah's swimming suit. The big kids and I watched in horror as it started to climb all over her. She was sweetly unaware of any problem. I waited for a minute, hoping it would fly off. When it seemed to be making itself nice and comfy I decided that I had better do something about it.

Truthfully, I should have just gone over and shooed it away. I was honestly terribly nervous that it would sting her if I swatted at it and maybe a teeny, tiny bit nervous that it would sting me. *blush* Horrible, I know. I decided to just spray her with the hose instead. Wasn't I just saying that wasps hate water? Surely the thing would fly away. But noooooooo! It just climbed up further onto her neck and settled in next to her ear. The older kids were FREAKING out and screaming and running around. I started to chase Bekah all over the yard, drenching her with water. She was crying and bewildered about why her formerly sane mother had suddenly lost all of her marbles! LOL. Emma started crying because Bekah was hysterical from my manic spraying/chasing and the older three were running around in panic, trying to see if the thing had flown away.

After all that water, the wasp was all tangled up in her hair next to her ear. It did not seem to have stung her yet (she was only crying because her crazy mother had been chasing her all over the yard and drenching her with the hose) but I was afraid it would any minute. I grabbed a towel and Bekah calmed down...believing that I was ready to dry her off after her unexpected shower. She grabbed the towel from me and wrapped herself all up in it. She also wrapped the wasp up. This made me nervous so I yanked the towel away from her, making her cry again (oh man...I can't believe I am even sharing this story...it really shows you what a terrible mom I am *grimace*).

As she stood there howling, I finally told the older kids that I would give any of them five bucks if they could get the wasp off of the baby!!!! I am so ashamed. This motivated Lizzie enough, however, to grab the towel from me and go over and use it to remove the wasp from Bekars hair. Lizzie is the opposite of me in this way, lol (and five dollars richer than I as well).

Anyway, I was so relieved that it was gone! I scooped my sweet little angel up and checked her throughly for bee stings. Nothing. That nice little wasp had left our baby alone. LOL...the poor thing was probably in shock.

Where is the mother bear response when you need it? Shouldn't I be diving into burning buildings for my kids? Come on! I couldn't even swat a wasp away!

P.S. Still waiting on Hong Kong...but I have HUNDREDS of adorable pictures, hehe.
