Wonderful Day

Yesterday, my sweet sister Emily flew in from Boise. I picked her up at the airport at 7:30am and we spent the day together. Her flight didn't leave until 8:30 that night so we were able to really enjoy ourselves. It was such a wonderful day.

We started by attending the General Primary meeting held here in the assembly hall. The General Primary Presidency and Board were wonderful and we both left the meeting feeling very inspired. We are excited to apply their teachings in both our Primary callings and our own homes.
After the meeting ended, we headed over to the Joseph Smith Memorial Building where we watched "Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration." It was awesome. What a great man. We loved the last line, "Shall we not go on in so great a cause?" Truly touching.
After spending the entire morning sitting (and crying, haha), we decided to stretch our legs a bit. We walked over to the church history museum. I've been there a couple of times with the kids, but it was so awesome to be able to slowly browse through all the amazing artifacts (the kids like it, but they have a tendency to drag me from exhibit to exhibit). It was especially nice to go there right after seeing the movie about Joseph Smith and the beginning of the church.
We grabbed a bite to eat at The Garden restaurant (at the top of the Joseph Smith Memorial building) and then decided to check out the new Deseret Book flagship across the street. We found some yummy treats and thought the store was pretty cool.
Next we took a tour of the conference center. It is such an amazing building! It has 1.4 MILLION square feet of space. Craziness. It was pretty busy, what with conference coming up this weekend, but we did get to enjoy a tour with only adults. There were some other tours near us with lots of kids and I was glad that on my kid-free day that we were able to get one with just grown-ups.
Across the street from the conference is the new Church History Library. We went in and discovered that there are quite a few books that feature our family. Grandma and Grandpa Gibbons have even submitted tons of photos of the Gibbons clan. The sister helping there mentioned that the building wouldn't be there at all if the Lord had not commanded us to keep a record. I thought it was pretty neat that we have this big building, filled with the records we have kept in response to that commandment.
Finally, pretty pooped, Em and I went over to a visitor's center on temple square and plopped ourselves down on some soft, comfy chairs where we could see the temple and chat. She is such a good sister and example and I really enjoyed visiting with her.

It was so great to spend an entire day immersed in spiritual things without kids around. It is definitely something we need to do again. While I was grateful for the day away, I was also filled with gratitude for my six wonderful children. When I called to check on them, they all gathered around the phone and yelled, "We miss you, Mom!" How blessed I am.
